Lunchtime Chess Club – Making The Right Move
In Clonaslee College, we believe that the most important thing that we as schools can do is to make our students feel welcome in their new school environment. We celebrate the diversity of our school community and work hard to ensure that all EAL students feel a sense of connection and belonging.
This has in part been achieved through the provision of a dedicated EAL classroom. The classroom is centrally located and has become a dedicated and safe space for all of our EAL students to engage in teaching, learning and social activities such as our lunchtime chess club.
The Chess Club is held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, in a relaxed environment to a background of classical music. The club is for all students in the school and helps to promote a harmonious and holistic integration of our EAL students into the school system.
Within the club, the students can collectively socialise and improve communication skills.
Students can share their ideas and listen as others share their strategies. There are many bonds to be created through any game, and when meeting on a regular basis, chess is no different. The most important objective, however, is that the students develop trust, confidence and new, meaningful and accepting friendships. The Chess Club helps to realise some of these goals.

Games Club
Clonaslee College games club takes place during lunchtime one day per week. Games club allows students to engage in single or multi-player friendly games. Games club is a safe inclusive lunchtime environment for students to participate in tabletop board games like chess, draughts, monoply and card games like UNO. During games club, students get to interact with one another and develop social skills in an enjoyable inclusive environment.
