Athletics

At Clonaslee College, we are thrilled to launch a new athletics initiative that is all about inspiring our students to get involved, have fun, and grow both on and off the field. Whether competing in races or honing their skills, students will learn that athletics is about more than just winning—it is about perseverance, teamwork, and true sportsmanship.

Basketball

Our school proudly fields four girls basketball teams – 1st years, 2nd years, U16 and U19. We compete in the Basketball Ireland Schools League every year. This league consists of 4 divisions A, B, C and D. We are currently competing in the B league following a six year stint in the A league.

Basketball is woven into the fabric of our school. It has become more than just a sport; it’s a tradition that brings our community together.

Over the years, our girls’ basketball teams have experienced great success. We have many Midland league titles and are the proud holders of 7 All Ireland titles.

This success has had a lasting impact, inspiring younger players and fuelling the growth of the Clonaslee Basketball club. What started in 1986 with Noreen Sweeney (teacher/coach) has flourished. The legacy of the team’s triumphs, built on hard work and teamwork, continues to motivate new generations, and the spirit of the game is alive and thriving within our school and within the wider community.

Junior Camogie

This year, camogie was offered to girls from first to transition year (u16). 25 girls made up the junior camogie panel representing local clubs, O’Moores of Laois and St. Sinchills of Offaly. While others got involved in the sport for the first time. They trained once a week at lunchtime in the school and played a number of matches both at home and away. The girls played against teams from Laois, Offaly and Kildare. This was a great opportunity for the girls to get involved in other sports, make new friendships, and promote physical fitness and well-being.

Student Experience

“I was on the junior camogie team this year with our coaches miss King and miss Lacey. This year was the first time we had a junior team for a number of years, and I felt privileged to make history in our school. We had trainings at lunch time each week to practice our skills. We had our first game on Friday the 29th of November against Newbridge and it was a tough match. The girls all tried their best, but Newbridge got their scores easier on the day. Although we lost we still had a great time playing together and making memories while representing the school and I hope that we have a senior team next year as well!” – Grace Kelly 3rd year

GAA in Clonaslee College

Clonaslee College has a rich history of GAA with many past pupils such as Niall Corbet (football), Fiachra C Fennell, Donnchadh Hartnett and Liam Senior (hurling) presently representing Laois as county level. Many of our students have and are currently on Laois development squads and minor panels. Past pupil Darren Rooney won all Ireland Minor and Leinster Senior Football titles with Laois, while Conor Gorman won all-Ireland Minor Football. At the start of each academic year students are encouraged to sign up and represent the school in provincial Leinster competitions including second year, junior and senior categories. Teams are entered in both codes with mentors from the teaching staff taking responsibility for the training, administration and match fixtures. Traditionally participation levels have always been high among the student body with many teams excelling in their various divisions. An astro turf facility to the rear of the school caters for a wide variety of sporting interests including lunchtime training etc. In addition, ample field space is available. The school fosters positive working relationships with Clonaslee St Mammans and Rosenallis GAA clubs, with many home games being played on both fields.

Clonaslee College Junior Ladies Football

Our junior ladies football team had a great year this year. The team was made up of students from Transition Year, Third Year, Second Year, and First Year. Even though they did not advance from the group stages, the girls played their best in every match and took the opportunity to further develop their skills and have fun. The girls involved not only proudly represented their school but also their clubs; Clonaslee St. Manmans, Co. Laois and St. Sinchills, Co. Offaly. Other members of the team did not have a club and enjoyed becoming part of a team. There is also a blitz for our u14 team which will take place in the new year, giving an opportunity for even more girls to become involved with school football.

Student Experience

“Our school football team had a good season this year. We had some victories and some losses, and showed resilience through tough games. Our team displayed great teamwork, both on and off the field. We were led by our dedicated coaches, who gave up their lunchtime to train us. As this season has now ended, we will look forward to next season and we hope to improve as a team and aim higher” – Niamh Coughlan
“Playing sports in school had a significant positive impact on my physical and mental wellbeing and in developing relationships during and after my school years” – Emily Corbet
