As part of their study of the American Revolution, 2nd Year History students recently got a taste of adult life in the colonies using a very different kind of currency — jellies. Each student received a small “wage” and quickly learned what it was like to pay taxes on everyday items, from tea to sugar.
It wasn’t long before frustration set in as their wages didn’t stretch far enough! Through this activity, students developed a sense of historical empathy. The game helped them understand the famous slogan “No Taxation Without Representation” and exactly why the colonists eventually chose to rebel.
The lesson also proved very topical with the recent budget and linked to their learning in Business Studies!
