This week, were delighted to welcome Edel and her assistance dog, Nala, from the Irish Wheelchair Association to Clonaslee College. Their visit was part of The DAISY Disability Awareness in Schools and Youth Project which is a brilliant programme developed by the IWA to challenge perceptions and stereotypes surrounding disability.
Through a fun, interactive workshop, students learned about the wide range of supports offered by the IWA. Edel highlighted that while many people associate the organisation solely with wheelchair users, around 70% of those they support are not wheelchair users, with many living with hidden disabilities such as neurodivergence. This message really encouraged our students to think differently about disability, inclusion and how we can learn more from other people’s expereinces.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the visit, especially getting to meet Nala, who was definitely the star of the show! A huge thanks to Edel and the Irish Wheelchair Association for such an engaging session, and to Mr Cotter for organising this important visit.
