On Ashling Murphy’s fourth anniversary, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund for their incredible generosity towards our school.
One of our teachers, Ms Buckley, was a very close personal friend of Ashling and has worked tirelessly alongside Ashling’s family, friends and neighbours through her involvement with the Memorial Fund. She is a brilliant advocate for the important work of the charity, which aims to invest in the areas Ashling was deeply passionate about, particularly education, music and her community.
In our case, Mr Lee applied for funding to improve our lunchtime facilities, creating spaces where students can come together to sit, chat and connect. We were absolutely delighted when we learned that his application had been successful.
Once the funding was secured, he contacted Alan Grehan, manager of Tirlán Mountmellick and a past pupil of Clonaslee College (and Senior Student of the Year in 2020 no less!). Alan was quick to help and enabled us to purchase five picnic benches at a very reasonable price, which were delivered before Christmas.
To mark the significance of this donation, Gerry Browne’s Jewellers in Portlaoise created beautiful plaques for each bench, ensuring that every student who sits down for a chat or a snack will see Ashling’s name and be reminded of the impact her legacy continues to have.
We are deeply grateful to:
• The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund for their generous grant
• Alan Grehan and Tirlán for helping the funding stretch so far
• Ms Buckley for her continued commitment to the charity and for encouraging this application
RIP Ashling. We are sincerely thankful for the hard work your family, friends and community continue to do in your honour.
