Our Transition Year students recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Munich, filled with culture, history, and adventure.
The trip began with a 2-hour guided walking tour of Munich’s city centre. Students explored iconic landmarks such as Marienplatz, the central square named after the 1638 statue of Our Lady; the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), with its striking 80m-high tower; the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), rebuilt in Gothic style after WWII; and the Frauenkirche, famous for its onion-domed towers and panoramic views over the city.
At BMW Welt and Museum, students explored the past and future of the BMW Group, including exhibits on BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad.
A day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle transported students into a real-life fairy tale. Built by King Ludwig II, the castle impressed everyone with its dramatic setting and medieval-style architecture.
There was also time for fun and relaxation at the Olympia Schwimmhalle, the swimming pool built for the 1972 Olympics.
One of the highlights was a fascinating underground tour of the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden. Wearing protective overalls, students learned about the history of salt mining in constant 12°C conditions.
Students enjoyed some free time at the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum, Munich’s largest shopping centre, with over 130 shops and restaurants.
The most reflective part of the trip was the visit to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, where students learned about the camp’s history and paid their respects to its victims.
The TY Munich trip was a powerful mix of learning, cultural discovery, and shared experiences that will be remembered for years to come.
