Student Council at Clonaslee College

The student council in Clonaslee College meet regularly to discuss school life, raise any student issues or concerns as voiced to them by the student body and organise events to promote wellbeing and student life in Clonaslee College.

At the beginning of the year, the Student Council were elected democratically. Members took part in a one day intensive student leadership training course in Tullamore with student council representatives from other LOETB schools.

The Student Council organise many events throughout the year. In October 2018 they organised a non-uniform/ costume day with prizes for the best Halloween costumes in each year. In December the Student Council annually run a Festive Christmas Quiz. It is the most highly anticipated event of the year. Students wear their Christmas jumpers and all assemble in the Leaving Cert social area after 11 o clock break. Ten teams of ten students are made up early that morning with each team led by a Leaving Cert student and a student from each year thereafter. Mr. Lee with great enthusiasm and natural flair M.C’s the event and enjoys selecting students (and new teachers) for a sing-song and spot- prizes along the way! The student council work hard in the weeks coming up to Christmas to compose a selection of questions for each round and on the day they correct each round as it is finished and display the results on the board. There is always a great atmosphere and Christmas cheer around the place! The winning teams enjoy their prizes of Thornton’s chocolates and selection boxes.

On that same week this year the student council were busy buying candy canes for every student and teacher in the school. Candy Cane labels were given out to students early in the week. On each label was the name of a student in their class and each student had to write a positive comment or note about that person. On the Thursday before the Christmas holidays every student and teacher received their candy cane with their positive message. It was a very successful wellbeing initiative.

On the 1st of February 2019, the week leading into the Mock examinations, the Student Council hosted a wellbeing coffee morning for Leaving Cert students. This took place over two classes on a Friday morning and students enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. They played board games and cards and got a chance to chat with their peers in a relaxed setting. It was very successful and students appreciated the 'time out' greatly. The Student Council along with the Principal and Deputy Principal will host a breakfast morning for all exam students on Friday 7th June 2019.

Our Student Council pride themselves in fundraising for a local charity once a year. Last year they held a very successful non-uniform day in March and raised money for Laois Hospice. This year, on the 21st of March the Student Council took part in ‘Rock your Socks’ fundraiser for Downs Syndrome Offaly and they raised €300.

In the run up to Easter this year the Student Council are organising an Easter Raffle with one giant Easter egg and various other goodies in a hamper. There is a hamper up for grabs for both Junior and Senior classes and a runner up Easter Egg for each year group.
