Our TY students have had a busy and exciting few weeks preparing for SciFest. It was fantastic to see their hard work on display today and to meet the judges at TUS Athlone.
Loren, Sheola, and Mary Kate explored the solubility of painkillers and how this affects their speed of effectiveness. They investigated the impact of temperature and found that 100°C was the optimum. Rebecca and Aine examined people’s habits when returning bottles under the new DRS scheme. Surprisingly, they discovered that many people are creating additional waste by discarding the bags used to return bottles! Jessica and Emma focused on tanning products, looking at their safety and whether consumers truly understand what they are applying to their skin. Ashleen and Niamh investigated whether expensive heat protectant products for hair are worth the price, concluding that more affordable options performed just as well. Finally, Conor, Senan and Ronan explored whether bamboo hurls are superior to ash. Their findings showed that traditional ash hurls still outperform bamboo.
It was a fantastic competition for our students to be involved in, and it was great to see the wide range of innovative projects presented by students from other schools. A huge thank you to Ms Cleare and Mr Madden for all their guidance and support throughout the preparations!
