A Visit From a Historian and Past Pupil: Dr Michael Loughman

We were delighted to welcome back our past pupil, Dr Michael Loughman, to Clonaslee to speak to our 1st, 5th and 6th year students. Michael recently completed a PhD in History alongside writing his book, James Ryan and the Development of Independent Ireland. He reminded us that history is the story of the past, drawing students into the life of James Ryan—from his involvement in the Easter Rising and the Civil War to his later significant government roles as a member of Fianna Fáil. Michael also gave students a real insight into the work of a historian, detailing the research involved finding and analysing sources, and bringing historical figures and events to life.

His book was officially unveiled in Hodges Figgis in Dublin earlier this year. It was launched by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and is now available in all good bookstores. See photos from the launch, where some of our past staff members were in attendance to support him on the night.

We wish Michael all the best with his book and encourage everyone to pick up a copy. It’s fantastic to see our alumni progressing so well. Huge congratulations, and thank you to Michael for his time!
